England's Northwest has a strong tradition of scientific excellence that has delivered some of the world's leading edge ideas and breakthroughs from the birth of the world's first test tube baby to the splitting of the atom. Science can play a leading role in improving the image of the Northwest as a hotbed of innovation at the cutting edge of scientific endeavour.

Universities: The region boasts one of the largest concentrations of universities in Europe with a combined turnover of £1.2 billion. As a result, the Northwest is host to one of the strongest research bases in Europe.

Research Institutes: In addition to traditional research departments, the region has over 50 Research Institutes, many multi-institutional.

Industrial Research Locations: Data regarding private sector R&D investment is available.. Government statistics from the 2008 scorecard show that 3 of the top 10 UK companies by R&D investment have significant R&D activities in the Northwest: Astra Zeneca (£2.5bn), Unilever (£637.5m) and Rolls-Royce (£454m).

Other major contributors in the region include: BAE Systems (£176m), Eli Lilly (£107m), Bentley Motors (£105m), Renovo (£20m) and Protherics (£18m)  

Science Parks and Incubators: These locations support the start up, incubation and development of innovation led, knowledge-based businesses and encourage relationships with centres of knowledge creation such as universities and research organisations.

Museums: The Northwest is host to a number of museums which provide exciting days out for all the family. Interactive displays bring scientific developments across the ages to life.
